The 3/8″ & 1/2″ mandrels are straight, over 1/2″ have a machined shoulder on one end to allow them to fit in a 1/2″ jacobs drill chuck (the most common chuck used for holding mandrels).

*Note of caution – the tailstock lock handle MUST be tightened anytime you are turning a mandrel. The centrifugal force and vibration caused by turning/sanding WILL cause an unlocked tailstock to back off and the mandrel will come off the live center, and will cause serious injury. many builders have purchased a 1/2″ live center from PennStateIndustries as an added measure of safety. To use this on the 5/8″ and 3/4″ mandrel, you will need to purchase a 3/4″ jacobs chuck, or use 5/8″ and 3/4″ collet chucks. The 3 jaw chucks (micro and standard) are not recommended for holding mandrels.
